Short answer first. If Ahrefs is too expensive for you, the three tools that can replace it for most businesses are Semrush ($139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually), SE Ranking ($129, or $103.20 annually) and Serpstat ($50, or about $31 annually). For a small site, Google Search Console plus the free Ahrefs plan covers more than people expect.
That is what every list on this topic tells you, in some order. Here is what they leave out, and what I spent a day measuring instead. Thirteen of the twenty prices those lists quote are wrong. Most of the lists are written by companies that sell one of the tools. And the moment you switch tools, the numbers about your own site change, sometimes by a factor of a hundred.
Key takeaways
- The page is a sales channel. Of the top twenty Google results for «ahrefs alternatives» in the US, twelve are published by SEO tool companies, and eight of those put their own product (or their owner's) first.
- The prices are stale. We checked twenty quoted prices against the vendors' own pricing pages on 17 October 2026. Thirteen do not match. Google's AI answer still says SE Ranking costs «$44 to $52»; it costs $129.
- The data is not interchangeable. For the same domain, SE Ranking, Semrush and Serpstat disagree on ranking keywords by 2–7× in the US database and by 46–565× in the Ukrainian one.
- None of them knows your traffic. For our own site the three tools estimate 1,833, 2,144 and 12,072 organic visits a month. Google Analytics counted 1,299.
- Pick by job, then calibrate. Choose the tool for the work you actually do, and check its numbers against your own Search Console before you report anything to anyone.
Who writes the «Ahrefs alternatives» page you are reading?
I pulled the top twenty organic results for «ahrefs alternatives» on google.com from a US location and opened every page. Then I sorted them by who publishes them, not by what they say.

Position two is SE Ranking's own list, with SE Ranking at number one. Position eight is Backlinko, which Semrush bought in 2022; Semrush is first there. AirOps, SaagaSolve, Surfaceable and ContextBolt all rank themselves first. Link-Assistant, the company behind SEO PowerSuite, opens with its own product. Only five places go to publishers with nothing to sell in this category.
None of this is a scandal. It is how the category works: a comparison page with buying intent and a $4 cost per click is worth writing if you sell the thing. But it means the order of tools on these pages tells you who wrote the page, not which tool is better for you.
I should say the same about us. SEOquick is a Serpstat partner studio. We have no partnership with Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking; we use SE Ranking and Semrush through their APIs for client work, and we used both to collect the data on this page. Keep that in mind when you get to the part where Serpstat looks good, and also to the part where it does not.
The prices you read are already wrong
Price is the main reason anyone searches for an Ahrefs alternative, so I checked the one fact every list repeats. For four tools I took the starting price each ranking page quotes, plus what Google's AI Mode answers, and compared it with the vendor's own pricing page on the same day.
The price you read vs the price on the vendor's page
Starting prices quoted for four tools by the pages that rank for «ahrefs alternatives», plus Google's AI answer. Hover or tap a dot for the source and its date.
13 of 20 quotes do not match what the vendor charges today. SE Ranking fares worst: Google's AI answer and three ranking pages still quote its old $44–65 plans.

Three things went wrong, and they are worth knowing because you will meet them on every comparison page.
Old plans that no longer exist. SE Ranking used to start at $52–65 a month. It now starts at $129 for Core, or $103.20 billed annually. Google's AI answer, Backlinko (updated 8 October 2026) and two other ranking pages still quote the old numbers. If you choose SE Ranking because it is «the cheap one», you will find out at checkout.
Old plan names. Semrush Pro at $139.95 was renamed and repriced; the entry plan is now called SEO and costs $139, or $117.33 annually. Ahrefs Lite moved from $99 to $129 a while ago, yet two pages still say $99.
Annual price shown as monthly. Zapier and Google's AI answer quote Semrush at $117.33. That is correct, but it is the price when you pay for a year upfront. Fine if you know it; misleading if you are comparing it with somebody else's month-to-month price.
And one more, closer to home. Our own Ahrefs review listed Semrush at «~$140–150/mo (Pro)» and Serpstat at «~$50–60». Both were out of date. We corrected that table in the same update that published this page.
What the alternatives actually cost in October 2026
Here are the entry prices from the vendors' own pages, checked on 17 October 2026. «Entry» means the cheapest plan that gives you the full set of core reports: site analysis, keywords, backlinks, rank tracking and an audit.
| Tool | Entry plan, monthly | Same plan, billed annually | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Lite, $129 | up to 17% off | Starter at $29 is a cut-down version; extra users cost $40 a month each on Lite |
| Semrush | SEO, $139 | $117.33 | the AI visibility features are in a separate Starter SEO+AI plan at $199; extra users from $45 |
| SE Ranking | Core, $129 | $103.20 | AI search tracking is an add-on at $89 a month ($71.20 annually) |
| Serpstat | Individual, $50 | about $31 | 100 searches a day; the API and the ChatGPT/Claude connector start on Team, $100 |
Read across the rows and the «cheaper alternative» story mostly falls apart. Semrush and SE Ranking cost about what Ahrefs Lite costs. The real savings are on annual billing, where SE Ranking comes out at $103.20, and at Serpstat, which is the only one of the four that starts well below $100.
The last column matters more than the price. A plan is cheap until you need a second login, the API, or AI-visibility tracking. For an agency, the second user alone can add $40–45 a month. For an owner who just wants to check the site once a week, the cut-down plans are often enough.
Same site, three databases: which numbers do you believe?
This is the part nobody writes about, and it decides more than the price does. Every one of these tools runs its own crawler, its own keyword database and its own traffic model. When you leave Ahrefs, you are not moving the same numbers into a new interface. You are switching to a different estimate of reality.
To see how different, I took fifteen domains and asked SE Ranking, Semrush and Serpstat about each of them on the same day: eight sites in the US database, including the tool vendors themselves, and seven in the Ukrainian one, including ours and a client's.
Same site, three databases
What SE Ranking, Semrush and Serpstat report for the same domains, October 2026. Log scale: each gridline is ten times the previous one. The number on the right is how far the highest estimate is from the lowest. Switch between keywords and traffic; the black diamond is our own Google Analytics.
In the US database the three tools disagree on keywords by 2–7× and on traffic by up to 16× (mangools.com). In the Ukrainian database the keyword gap is 46–565×. For our own site the tools put organic traffic at 1,833, 2,144 and 12,072 visits a month; Google Analytics counted 1,299 sessions.

| serpstat.com | UA | 32,206 | 551 | 311,216 | 4,569 | 8,600 | 43,982 | — |
In the US the tools are in the same order of magnitude. They still disagree a lot: for moz.com, ranking keywords run from 32,089 in Serpstat to 225,796 in Semrush, and estimated traffic from 91,867 in SE Ranking to 649,284 in Semrush. Mangools gets the widest traffic range, 23,934 to 376,513 visits a month, a factor of sixteen.
Outside the US the picture changes completely. In the Ukrainian database Serpstat sees roughly ten times more keywords than SE Ranking, and SE Ranking sees roughly ten times more than Semrush. For seoquick.com.ua that is 142,467 against 13,272 against 358. Same site, same month.
The traffic numbers are closer, but none of them is right. Google Analytics counted 1,299 organic sessions from Ukraine on our site over the last thirty days. Semrush estimates 1,833, SE Ranking 2,144, Serpstat 12,072. GA4 undercounts a bit, because people who decline analytics cookies are not recorded. It does not undercount ninefold.
The same gap shows up in search volume, which is what you base content decisions on. A content plan I am working through has 88 US keywords. Semrush puts their combined volume at 115,350 searches a month. SE Ranking puts it at 17,720. If you budget content by that number, the tool you happen to use changes the budget by six and a half times.
Brand names are no safer. In the Ukrainian database SE Ranking says its own name is searched 10 times a month; Semrush says 1,900. For «serpstat» it is 70 against 2,400.
What follows from this is simple. Do not compare tools by «who shows more». More keywords does not mean more accuracy, only a different counting rule. A bigger database means the tool counts more long-tail positions in the top 100, many of which bring nobody. And do not compare your site with a competitor using one tool, then check yourself with another.
A ten-minute test before you pay for any of them
All four tools have a free trial or a free tier. Use it on your own site, because that is the only site where you know the right answer.
- Open Google Search Console, Performance, last 28 days. Note total clicks and the number of queries with at least one click.
- Put your domain into the tool you are considering, same country database. Note estimated organic traffic and keywords in the top 10.
- Divide. If the tool says 2,000 visits and Search Console says 1,300 clicks, its estimates for your market run about 1.5× high. That ratio is now your correction factor for every competitor you look at in that tool.
- Check five queries you know you rank for. If the tool does not see them, or shows positions off by more than three, it does not crawl your niche well, whatever its database size.
On our site that test rules out using Serpstat's traffic estimate as an absolute number for Ukraine, which is the market it is strongest in. We keep using it for keyword research. We just do not quote its traffic figure to clients.
What you lose when you switch
The subscription is the easy part. The cost people notice three months later is the broken history.
Rank-tracking history does not move. Positions you tracked in Ahrefs stay in Ahrefs. The new tool starts its graphs on the day you add the keywords. Export the tracking report as CSV before the subscription ends, or you lose the «before» picture for every change you made last year.
The dashboard will jump. Because every tool counts differently, the first month in the new one will show your traffic and keywords going up or down by a factor that has nothing to do with your site. On our own domain, moving from Semrush to Serpstat would «add» 142,000 keywords overnight. Tell whoever reads your reports before they see it, and restart the baseline from the switch date.
Backlink lists will not match. Each crawler finds a different subset of the links pointing at you. A disavow file or an outreach list built in Ahrefs is still valid; just do not expect the new tool to show the same totals, or to flag the same «new» and «lost» links.
If what you need from Ahrefs is an occasional backlink check, the cheapest move may not be an alternative at all. Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month, switched on for the month you need it, can cost less than a year of anything else, as long as its trimmed-down reports cover what you check.
Which alternative fits which job
Owners usually do not need «an SEO tool». They need one or two specific jobs done. Here is how I would match them, from what we use in client work.
| Your main job | What fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Building links, auditing a backlink profile | stay on Ahrefs, or Ahrefs Starter for spot checks | the backlink index is still the reason people pay for Ahrefs; none of the alternatives replaces it one to one |
| Content and PPC from one place | Semrush | the strongest keyword and advertising data in the US; the most expensive once you add users |
| Rank tracking and client reports for an agency | SE Ranking | tracking and client reports at a lower annual price; check the AI add-on cost |
| Ukraine and nearby markets, API work on a budget | Serpstat | the largest Ukrainian keyword database we measured; API from the $100 plan |
| A small site checked once a month | Search Console plus the free Ahrefs plan | real clicks from Google, your own backlinks and a site audit, for nothing |
One thing I would not do is pay for a tool to «do keyword research» for a ten-page site. As I wrote in our Telegram channel:
«You don't need keyword research services for content. It took me five months to reach that conclusion. To pick a topic, to read the intent, to build the structure, one keyword is enough. I don't need a keyword — I need a real user query.»
For that, Search Console's query report and our free keyword generator will get a small business surprisingly far.
The tools, briefly
Semrush
The broadest toolkit of the four and the one most US agencies already know. Its US keyword volumes ran the highest in our check, so treat its traffic numbers as optimistic. The entry plan is $139 a month, $117.33 billed annually, and the price climbs fast with users and the AI add-ons. It also owns Backlinko, which is worth knowing when you read Backlinko's ranking of Semrush.
SE Ranking
Once the budget option, now priced next to Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month, or $103.20 annually. On our own site its traffic estimate was 65% above what Google Analytics recorded, second closest after Semrush. Its keyword counts sit between the other two in the Ukrainian database and run highest in the US one for most domains. Good for agencies that live in rank tracking and reports. Ignore any page that says it costs $44 or $52.
Serpstat
The cheapest full toolkit at $50 a month, and founded in Odesa, which explains why its Ukrainian database is the deepest we measured. It is also the one we know best: we work with it as a partner studio. As I put it in our Telegram channel in May:
«I haven't used Ahrefs for almost a year. We work as a studio, as partners with Serpstat, so there are things in it I really love. I can easily set up API scripts for AI that pick the top five keywords for my list of pages based on the stats. And they don't have to be my pages; competitors' pages work too. For the Ukrainian market it does a great job.»
The flip side is on the chart above. In the US database Serpstat sees the fewest keywords for almost every domain, and in Ukraine it estimated our traffic at nine times what we actually get. Use it for research and keyword collection, not as a traffic counter. Our Serpstat review goes through the modules.
Mangools
A lighter tool built around keyword research, popular with bloggers and small sites. Its own comparison page says plans start from $37.70 a month. Their pricing table did not load in a form we could verify, so check the current figure before you buy. Fine for a single site; not built for agency reporting.
The free stack
Google Search Console shows real clicks, queries and indexing problems for your own site; no third-party tool can. The free Ahrefs plan, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, adds your backlinks and a site audit once you verify the site. For a single small business site this covers most of what the paid tools are bought for. You only lose the ability to look at competitors in depth, which is exactly what you are paying for.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a free alternative to Ahrefs?
For your own site, yes: Google Search Console plus the free Ahrefs plan. For competitor research, no tool gives you serious data for free; trials and daily limits are as far as it goes.
Which is more accurate, Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or Serpstat?
None of them is accurate in absolute terms. They estimate traffic from rankings and click-through models, and on our own site the estimates ranged from 41% high to nine times high. They are useful for comparing sites inside one tool, and for spotting trends. Calibrate against your Search Console before you trust any absolute number, and never mix tools in one comparison.
Is SE Ranking really cheaper than Ahrefs?
Not month to month any more: both start at $129. On annual billing SE Ranking comes to $103.20 a month.
