Not keywords — the meaning of the conversation
In Google Ads you buy a query. In ChatGPT there is no query — there is a conversation. People describe the problem in their own words, follow up, compare. The system picks an ad from the context of that conversation, the user's intent, and the ad copy itself.
Advertisers do not supply a phrase list. They supply context hints — the topics an ad belongs next to. There is no exact keyword match, so the familiar logic of negatives and match types does not apply. What does apply is understanding how your customer talks before buying.
Ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers, and they only run in conversations deemed brand-safe. Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers never see them, and neither do users under 18.
